Baume & Mercier Makes the Case for Going Smaller

Case sizes have crept upward for the better part of two decades, and most of the industry’s recent attention has gone towards reversing that on men’s watches. Hampton XS takes the opposite route on a design built for smaller wrists to begin with. Baume & Mercier has cased its rectangular Hampton at 28 x 17.75mm, the tightest dimensions the collection has worn since its creation, without touching the Art Deco geometry that has defined it from the start.

That geometry has always been the point. Hampton first arrived built on the strict lines and structured proportions of Art Deco design, an aesthetic language that has aged unusually well precisely because it depends on ratio and symmetry rather than ornament. Every version since has kept faith with that discipline, and XS is no exception. At 6.3mm thick, the new case reads slim on the wrist, and the reduced footprint changes the watch’s presence without diluting the architectural character that separates Hampton from the rest of the Maison’s catalogue.

The dial carries most of the redesign’s weight. Faceted on all four sides, cut the way a stone might be set into a ring rather than shaped for a case, it catches light differently depending on the angle you’re viewing it from, shifting between a flat plane and something with real depth as the wrist moves. Baume & Mercier has removed the indexes altogether, so the rectangular outline sits alone on the dial, unbroken by markers, giving the whole face a graphic clarity that’s new to the collection. A new bracelet accompanies it: a repeating diamond-shaped metal link that mirrors the case’s angles and sits flat against the wrist instead of fighting its rectangular lines, a detail that extends the architecture of the case into the strap itself.

Four versions make up the launch, each offering a different read on the same design. The steel model pairs a warm silver sunray dial with a grey taupe calfskin strap, 4N gilded fan-shaped hands, and a Phi logo at 12 o’clock. A 4N PVD version carries that same warm tone through the hands and case, worn on black calfskin for a slightly graver finish. The bracelet edition swaps the strap for the new diamond-link design in polished and satin-finished steel, while a fourth version sets 28 brilliant-cut diamonds around a black dial, replacing the gold hands with rhodium for a cooler, eveningwear-leaning palette.

All four run on the same Ronda 751 quartz movement, rated for five years between battery changes, a practical choice that keeps the focus on the case rather than the mechanics inside it. The case backs can be engraved on request, the crowns are set with black agate, and water resistance holds at 50m, enough for daily wear without asking the watch to do anything it wasn’t designed for. Hampton has always been built around proportion rather than function, and XS keeps to that brief at a smaller scale, tighter in case, minimalist on the dial, but unmistakably itself.
