Introducing the Art Deco-inspired Speake Marin Dual Time Pink Watch

A combination of red and white colours, pink has always been associated with the concept of love and intimacy. The colour is neither too bright nor too dull and this is a shade that has served as the backdrop for myriad art works, including films — remember The Grand Budapest Hotel? Pink is ubiquitous in the world of horology as well. Speake Marin is the latest luxury watch brand to celebrate the colour.

Speake Marin’s dual time with retrograde date is back in a hot contemporary blend of pink and matte black DLC-coated titanium.

After releasing the lime green variant of its Openworked Dual Time in 2021, Speake Marin has now released the hallowed model in pastel pink. The new model comes in two sizes — 38 mm (Ref. 413809430) and 42 mm (Ref. 414209430). There is a 10-piece limited edition for the 38 mm model and a 28-piece one for the 42 mm version. In the eternal words of Aerosmith, “Pink, it's my new obsession, yeah Pink, it's not even a question/Pink on the lips of your lover.” Well, the new Openworked Dual Time Pink from Speake Marin seems to be embodying the essence of the song. The latest Speake-Marin Openworked watch has an emboldened colour scheme — you cannot miss the touches of bubble gum pink. Apparently, this is inspired by Art Deco architecture seen in Miami’s Ocean Drive district.

Speake Marin might be based in Switzerland, but its watches are true to the British heritage of the brand, where eccentricity of the sartorial and mechanical type reigns supreme.

Both models come in piccadilly cases, crafted from titanium, with black DLC coating. Let's now examine the watch clockwise. The pink small seconds counter at 1:30 gets the signature horseshoe-shaped track with a 31-day scale. This day track corresponds to the retrograde date indication that jumps back to 1 when it has completed its monthly cycle and can be adjusted with the pusher in the caseband at 7 o’clock. The seconds counter is placed close to the fluted crown and the winding system, without any ring. Local and GMT times are set with the three positions of the titanium-black PVD integrated crown.

Even if you are familiar with the unconventional location of the small seconds counter of the SMA calibre, you will see that in the Dual Time, just about everything, save central hours and minutes, is off-centred.

At 5 o'clock, there is a barrel with a wheel held in place by an openworked black DLC bridge and surmounted by the wheels of the geartrain. At 9 o’clock, you can find the two-tone GMT dial with its 24-hour scale. This dial now comes in pink for daylight hours and black for night time. The 24-hour home track is indicated by an arrow pointer with a pink fluorescent insert. All three elements — the hour, minutes hands and the seconds subdial — are triangulated, even though they are placed at different heights. Local time is indicated by the signature Speake Marin heart-shaped hour and minute hands with pink lacquer to match the dial.

The 38mm version of the Speake Marin Dual Time Lime is limited to 10 pieces, while the 42mm case size is limited to 18 pieces.

Powering the watch is the in-house Calibre SMA02 automatic movement with 52 hours of power reserve. Turning the watch over showcases the fully integrated micro-rotor with the ‘Speake Marin’ and ‘One & Two’ engraving on the outer periphery of the caseback. The latter also showcases the escapement and the balance wheel at 12 o’clock. Both 38 mm and 42 mm versions are finished on pink rubber straps with pin buckles in titanium with black DLC coating.
