Panerai Launches the New Luna Rossa Collection, Honouring its Partnership with America’s Cup

While Prada and Pirelli are the co-partners for the 37th America’s Cup in Barcelona, Panerai is the official sponsor of the race, which will be held next year. In 1851, an American schooner, called America, won the regatta around the Isle of Wight, off the British coast, and thus the America’s Cup was born. Taking its partnership with the prestigious event to newer heights, Panerai has revealed five new timepieces, namely Luminor Quaranta Steel DLC Luna Rossa (Ref. PAM01408), Luminor Quaranta BiTempo Luna Rossa (Ref. PAM01404), Luminor Chrono CarbotechTM Luna Rossa (Ref. PAM01519), Luminor Due Luna Rossa (Ref. PAM01378), and Luminor Due Luna Rossa (Ref. PAM01381). With these offerings, the luxury timepiece maker has expanded its Luminor and Luminor Due novelties; the latest watches will be available only at Panerai’s boutiques.

The technologically advanced boats used in the race  — the AC75s — can be called the Formula 1 versions for yachting. Lifting them out of the water, the foils enable the yachts to gather a momentum that helps them sail four times faster. Some of the finest sailing talent will be responsible for racing the power yachts. The new Panerai Luna Rossa watches seem to be a perfect tribute to the race. On the one hand, Luminor Quaranta Steel DLC Luna Rossa, Luminor Quaranta BiTempo Luna Rossa, Luminor Due Luna Rossa, and Luminor Due Luna Rossa come with the signature Calibre P900 movement, delivering a three-day power reserve. On the other hand, the Luminor Chrono CarbotechTM Luna Rossa has a P9200 movement with 42 hours of power reserve.

Luminor Quaranta Steel DLC Luna Rossa (Ref. PAM01408)

This 40 mm model comes with brushed steel DLC-coated case, lugs, bezel, and crown with crown guards. The dial gets a sunray blue finish, with Arabic numerals for only 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock. There is a red small seconds hand at 9 o’clock, along with a date window at 3 o’clock.

The watch is finished on a bi-material rubber/textile Luna Rossa dark blue strap with a PAM click release system buckle.

Panerai Luminor Quaranta BiTempo Luna Rossa (Ref. PAM01404)

BiTempo roughly means ‘two time’. This model comes with brushed steel 40 mm case, bezel, and crown with crown guards. The dial gets a blue sun-brushed finishing. It has Arabic numerals for only 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock, and sports a red small seconds hand at 9 o’clock and a date window at 3 o’clock. There is another seconds hand with a red arrow top for the GMT functionality.

This model is finished on a bi-material rubber/textile Luna Rossa dark blue strap with a trapezoidal classic polished steel-titanium clasp, accompanied by a PAM click release system buckle.

Panerai Luminor Chrono Carbotech™ Luna Rossa (Ref. PAM01519)

This model is limited to 37 pieces and the owners will get exclusive access to the 37th America’s Cup. This 44 mm bold watch comes with Carbotech case, bezel, lugs, crown with crown guards, and two pushers on the left side of the case at 10 o’clock and 7 o’clock. The chronograph gets a tachymeter for measuring speed and distance and a blue sunbrushed dial with black bicompax subdials; at 9 o’clock is the small seconds subdial while a 30-minute chronograph counter can be spotted at 3 o’clock.

This model gets black hour, minute hands with a black-red tipped central seconds hand. It is finished on a bi-material rubber/textile Luna Rossa rubber/textile strap, with a trapezoidal titanium clasp and a PAM click release system buckle.

Panerai Luminor Due Luna Rossa (Refs. PAM01378 and PAM01381)

Both models get the polished steel cases, bezels, and lugs. The white dial gets grey Arabic hour markers for 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock, a red seconds hand at 9 o’clock, and a date window at 3 o’clock.

There are differences as well.  While PAM01378 comes in a 38 mm case and is finished on a white Saffiano calf Luna Rossa strap, PAM01381 has a 42 mm case and is accompanied by a bi-material rubber/textile Luna Rossa strap in grey.
