Speake Marin Introduces the Ripples Metallic Green at Dubai Watch Week 2023

Speake Marin has unveiled its latest addition to the Ripples collection at Dubai Watch Week 2023. The Ripples Metallic Green, a limited edition of 60 pieces, sports a steel 40.3 mm “La City” case that the collection is known for, inspired by the architecture of London’s financial district, and a metallic green dial, inspired by London’s Sky Garden — both acknowledging the brand’s British origins.

Inspired by the concept of an urban oasis, the timepiece was crafted with the intention to invite wearers to escape to a serene garden located amidst a bustling cityscape. While the case — designed by Stéphane Lacroix — brings to mind the architecture of a metropolis, the new dial with its metallic green hue and the “Ripples” finish reflects a sense of calm and serves as  a reminder that nature’s beauty can coexist within a city’s fast-paced energy.

The case, made of polished/satin-brushed stainless steel, features an octagonal bezel with  rounded, bevelled, and polished edges and a screw-down crown. At a thickness of 9.20 mm, the timepiece sits comfortably on the wrist and the integrated three-link bracelet in polished/satin-finished stainless steel adds a seamless visual harmony. The water resistance is up to 50 metres. The caseback offers the wearer a view of the meticulously designed in-house movement: calibre SMA03-T. Comprising 144 components, it was developed, assembled and tested at the Speake Marin Swiss-based workshop, “Le Cercle des Horlogers”. The movement has a fully integrated micro-rotor in tungsten, rhodium-plated Geneva stripes, bridges with hand-bevelled, polished edges and inner angles. It beats at a frequency of 4Hz and, when fully wound, guarantees a power reserve of 52 hours.

The metallic green hue of the dial is the result of highly skilled craftsmanship. Arriving at the specific shade of green requires a highly complex and precise process. A rhodium-plated brass plate forms the essence of the dial with the quality of the material allowing for different light reflections. The surface is engraved with satin-finish horizontal waves, covered with a metallic green PVD coating. Finally, a layer of transparent lacquer seals everything in. The wave motif on the dial adds a dynamic interplay of light and shadow that enhances the overall legibility.

The hour and minute hands are heart-shaped and rhodium-plated, and pay homage to Speake Marin’s British roots, recalling the hands of the iconic Big Ben. The small seconds are placed at 1:30: a rather unusual positioning and one of the brand’s design signatures. The placement furthers the brand’s objective of consciously diverting from traditional watchmaking codes; Speake Marin remains the only watchmaker that positions its small seconds at this point.

Introduced for the first time at Watches and Wonders 2022, the Ripples collection has stood out with its distinct variations, and the Ripples Metallic Green embodies the brand’s commitment to pursuing innovation while never compromising on horological excellence.
