Alexander Shorokhoff: German Innovation and Precision Make Their Mark in India

Now available in India via India’s premier retailer, Helios Luxe, Alexander Shorokhoff arrives not as a newcomer, but as a radical voice in contemporary watchmaking. The Maison has long distinguished itself through a design language that leans into an avant-garde style where traditional mechanics meet expressive, almost gallery-worthy timepieces. In conversation, CEO Alexander Shorokhov and Inga Duffy-Shorokhova take us beyond the dial, offering insight into the creative impulses, design intricacies, and behind-the-scenes craftsmanship that shape each singular watch of the brand.

Edited excerpts from the interview:

Q: Alexander Shorokhoff watches are often described as “art on the wrist”. How does the brand translate artistic inspiration into the technical language of watchmaking?

At its core, every Alexander Shorokhoff timepiece begins as a technical instrument but one that is gradually transformed into an artistic canvas. The process starts with the movement, where intricate hand engraving becomes the first expression of artistry. Executed by highly skilled craftsmen, these engravings elevate mechanical components into decorative statements, setting the tone for the watch’s identity.

From there, inspiration is translated onto the dial, often through bold compositions, textures, and skeletonisation, yet always within the constraints of precision engineering. Collections such as “Kandy” exemplify this balance, where geometric sectoring introduces a structured, technical framework that seamlessly accommodates artistic expression.

Even the case construction plays a crucial role. Complex designs, such as grooved case middles housing delicate wire elements, demand unconventional assembly techniques and exceptional precision. Similarly, hands are meticulously adapted to varying dial thicknesses, ensuring flawless movement and legibility. Ultimately, each watch becomes a convergence of art and engineering.

Q: The brand blends Russian cultural influences with German craftsmanship. How does this dual heritage shape the identity and aesthetics of your timepieces?

For Alexander Shorokhoff, heritage is less a boundary and more a point of departure. While the brand’s roots trace back to Russian culture and German craftsmanship, its creative language is intentionally borderless. Figures like Wassily Kandinsky (often associated with Russian avant-garde) serve as important references, yet their influence is reinterpreted through the Maison’s own distinctive design codes rather than replicated.

Inspiration, in this sense, is fluid. It extends far beyond geography, drawing equally from global artistic icons such as Frida Kahlo and Pablo Picasso, as well as from architecture, music, nature, and everyday encounters. The brand views creativity as an ever-evolving dialogue that is shaped by people, places, and perspectives encountered along the way.

Q: How do you see the brand resonating with the Indian collector base and watch enthusiasts?

For Alexander Shorokhoff, the connection with Indian collectors feels instinctive rather than strategic. At its heart, the brand is built on emotion, storytelling, and a deep respect for craftsmanship — values that strongly echo within India’s growing community of watch enthusiasts. There is a clear appreciation here for artistry, colour, and individuality, and an openness to watches that go beyond convention.

As the market evolves, collectors are increasingly seeking pieces with character and creative distinction, something that aligns closely with the Maison’s avant-garde philosophy. This resonance is not entirely new; the brand has already found admirers in India over the years, with a small but engaged collector base that understands its design language.

With its formal presence now strengthened through Helios Luxe, the brand is well-positioned to reach the right audience. Early conversations and growing interest suggest a strong word-of-mouth culture, where collectors themselves become ambassadors who are sharing, influencing, and expanding the community organically.
