Mission Mojave: The New 41 mm IWC Schaffhausen Variant Joins the ‘Colors of TOP GUN’ Fleet

Few timepieces have fused function and form with as much commanding authority as the IWC Big Pilot. Originally conceived in the 1940s for military aviators navigating the chaos of the skies, it quickly earned a reputation for being uncompromisingly robust, highly legible, and mechanically precise. Designed for practicality in extreme conditions, the model’s oversized crown allowed for adjustments while wearing gloves, becoming an enduring signature of its design. Meanwhile, its stark, high-contrast dial ensured instant readability, even in the most turbulent environments. Yet what began as a tool for pilots soon transcended the cockpit. Over the decades, the Big Pilot has evolved into a symbol of horological confidence; its bold presence on the wrist is a testament to both mechanical mastery and aviation heritage. Now, in 2025, IWC has expanded its ‘Colors of TOP GUN’ collection with the latest addition: the Pilot’s Watch Automatic 41 TOP GUN Mojave Desert (Ref. IW328106). Inspired by Navy pilots’ flight suits and the sunbaked landscape surrounding China Lake in the Western Mojave Desert, this new variant continues the legacy of rugged elegance in military-inspired watchmaking.

The IWC Big Pilot has always been admired for its commanding 46 mm case size, a hallmark of its bold aviation heritage. This imposing dimension remains a defining feature in standout editions like the Lake Tahoe Perpetual Calendar, with its striking white ceramic case; the Timezoner TOP GUN Woodland, dressed in deep green ceramic and engineered for instant time zone changes; and the Chronograph Edition Mojave Desert, which pays homage to arid landscapes with its sand-coloured ceramic and tactical aesthetic. IWC has gradually reduced the size of its iconic Big Pilot's Watches from the traditional 43 mm to a more wrist-friendly 41 mm, significantly enhancing wearability without compromising the model’s signature aesthetic. This shift reflects the brand’s effort to make the watch more comfortable for daily use and more accessible to a broader audience.

The new variant, Pilot’s Watch Automatic 41 TOP GUN Mojave Desert, is crafted from a sand-coloured ceramic. Creating ceramics involves a complex manufacturing process. It begins with powdered raw materials, which are shaped into a pre-form known as “green body” and then machined closer to the final geometry. The next step involves sintering the case at high temperatures in a kiln. During this process, ceramic obtains properties like its extreme hardness and resistance to scratches. The distinctive “Mojave Desert” colour is achieved by blending zirconium oxide with other metallic oxides in a precisely defined mixing ratio.

As the colour changes during the sintering process, countless trials are needed to achieve the desired result. Enhancing the overall aesthetics of the IWC Mojave Desert iteration are a 41 mm case, lugs, and a titanium screw-in crown at 3 o'clock. The dial features a minute scale and Arabic hour markers, all coated with Super-LumiNova®. The date window at 3 o'clock, and the hour, minute, and second hands are all in brown. The Pilot’s Watch Automatic 41 TOP GUN Mojave Desert is powered by the IWC-manufactured 32112 calibre. Its balance oscillates at a frequency of 4 Hz, ensuring a precise rate. The movement is equipped with an automatic pawl winding system. It uses movements of the rotor in both directions to generate a power reserve of 120 hours. Turning each watch showcases the closed titanium caseback, engraved with the TOP GUN logo. Finishing the watch is a beige rubber strap with a titanium pin buckle.
