Precision Play: Presenting the New Portofino Automatic Pointer Date, IWC’s 17th Timepiece for Laureus Sport for Good

Uniting people across cultures, languages, and borders, sport possesses a rare, magnetic allure. It is the great equaliser, a universal language spoken through movement, passion, and the shared rhythm of competition. Whether it’s a packed stadium roaring in unison or children marking goalposts with flip-flops on a dusty field, sport transforms fleeting moments into lasting memories, strangers into teammates, and cities into vibrant platforms for celebrations. From the electric pulse of cricket in Mumbai to the samba-infused spectacle of football in Rio, it fosters a collective spirit of joy, identity, and pride. It instills discipline without drudgery, fuels dreams without boundaries, and, most beautifully, reminds us that in the grand arena of life, we all play on the same field.

To underscore the transformative power of sports, IWC Schaffhausen has introduced the Portofino Automatic Pointer Date Laureus (Ref. IW359202) watch, the latest in its ongoing commitment to Laureus Sport for Good. This is the 17th special edition crafted by the Swiss luxury watchmaker to support the foundation’s activities. Founded in 2000, Laureus Sport for Good has helped over 7 million children and young people overcome violence, injustice, and inequality through sports. The organisation, now under the chairmanship of Johann Rupert, Compagnie Financiere Richemont SA, presently supports over 300 programmes across 40 nations and territories worldwide. IWC Schaffhausen became a Global Partner in 2005 and has since worked with Laureus on multiple occasions.

The new watch features a 39 mm stainless steel case, lugs, and a crown at 3 o’clock. The dial has a sunray finish in the characteristic Laureus blue colour. The applied hour markers, the Roman ‘XII’ numeral at 12 o’clock, the hour, minute, second hands, and the date hand at 6 o’clock are rhodium-plated. The date has Arabic numerals for odd numbers while even the numbers are dotted; ‘31’ is marked in red. On the outer periphery of the dial lies a minute track with a red ‘60’ numeral and a 5-minute interval. Powering the watch is Calibre 35160 with automatic winding and a power reserve of 50 hours. The closed  stainless steel caseback features an engraving of the Laureus Sport for Good logo, reminding the wearer of the 25th anniversary that the foundation is celebrating this year. In fact, the playful caseback engraving has been created by a young contest winner from the programme. Finishing the watch is a blue calfskin strap with a stainless steel butterfly folding clasp.
