That ‘70s Dial: Nivada Grenchen Showcases the New Limited Edition Chronoking ‘Paul Newman’ Orange Watch

Nivada Grenchen has worked on putting forth a brand new version of its hallowed Chronomaster, inspired by a vintage Chronoking dial, straight out of the 1970s. The result: Nivada Grenchen Chronoking ‘Paul Newman’ Orange, just released by the luxury watch brand. As all film buffs would know, Paul Leonard Newman, legendary Hollywood actor, wore many hats — he was also a director, a race car driver, a philanthropist, and an entrepreneur. He was the co-founder of Newman-Haas racing in 1982. The Nivada Grenchen ‘Paul Newman’ Orange timepiece is a limited edition. Collectors will have a five-week window, from July 27 to August 31, to pre-order; all orders will be honoured and delivered this September and October.

There are a few style statements that will never go out of fashion, such as brogues, leather belts, and vintage watches. Such watches are in demand because of the nostalgia they evoke. Vintage watches are for all occasions. Owning vintage watches has several advantages — these have stood the test of time, withstanding adverse conditions, and boast a timeless aesthetic appeal.  The Nivada Grenchen Chronoking ‘Paul Newman’ Orange edition is housed in a 38 mm stainless steel case; it has stainless steel, elongated lugs, a 60-minute, unidirectional rotating, aluminium, knurled bezel, two stainless steel chronograph pushers at 2 o’clock and 4 o’clock, and a crown at 3 o’clock.

The watch also comes with a double-domed sapphire crystal, under which lie the black tachymeter scale on the outer periphery of the dial and an orange minute track on the black dial. Furthermore, the watch features a tan colour setup for its counters — one can spot a 60-minute counter at 9 o’clock, a 60-second counter at 6 o’clock, and a 24-hour counter at 3 o’clock. All three counters get black hands and baton-shaped hour markers. The Nivada Grenchen Chronoking logo sits at 12 o’clock, with stainless steel hour, minute hands and an orange central seconds hand.

Powering the watch is the Seiko VK64 meca-quartz movement. This movement uses quartz technology for the main functions of the watch and a mechanical module for operating the chronograph. That is why these are often called hybrid movements. The watch, finished on a slack ‘Tropic’ strap with holes, is water-resistant for up to 100 metres.
